Life Coaching: Q & A
“We should take care not to make the intellect our god;
it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.”

Is coaching only
related to career?
No. You may choose to focus on issues related to
your career but the scope of coaching is as broad as your life. It's
up to you to choose the focus. Working with a coach can enhance the
quality of each area of your life and the balance of all parts. If you are
having a hard time in any part of your life, feeling confused or unsatisfied,
coaching will help.
Do you have to have a so called
"problem" to work with a coach?
Coaching is helpful whether you are dealing with a
specific challenge/problem or not. Many people work with a
coach because they want to develop themselves, perform at their peak, and be
more successful in whatever they do. Other people hire a coach because
they are stuck or confused about how to move forward and want help
figuring it out.
How does coaching
create motivation for change?
Coaching begins by developing greater awareness of what has
true meaning and value to you. This understanding helps to fully engage
you in your life and becomes the foundation for action, change, and a new way
of being. This is true motivation. The result is a more fulfilling
and balanced life that fits your individual uniqueness.
Will coaching really work for me?
Maybe. Maybe not. For coaching to work you have to want
things to improve and be willing to change. You
don't have to know what you want or how to make it happen but you do have to be
willing to try. It's about intention not execution.
What is it like to be
coached?
Coaching is a collaborative process. The client decides what to talk
about and the coach helps find the solution, path, or way that is
right for the client. A coaching session usually begins with an update
about the past week and ends with a focus for the upcoming week. During
the heart of the session, the coach asks questions to help the client
clarify the way that they feel about things and explore new
possibilities. The coach may also lead the client in short activities and
exercises designed for learning and growth. You are welcome
to contact me for a complimentary sample session to get a true feel
for what it's like to be coached.
How is coaching
different from therapy?
Coaching remains grounded in the present and focuses on strengths,
possibilities, and moving forward. Coaching is intended for emotionally
healthy people. The coaching model views the client as naturally
creative, resourceful, and whole. From the coaches perspective there
is nothing to fix, only potential to develop, obstacles to overcome,
and limiting beliefs to peel away. Therapy is effective in healing what
has happened in the past and resolving sources of conflict, pain, and
trauma. Therapy is appropriate for people who have a history of
behavioral problems and depression, whereas coaching is not.
